Elliot Thayer

In 1982, Elliot Thayer received his professional engineer’s license and started Thayer Engineering Company out of the basement of his home. He was the sole employee. Over the next two years, he brought in two partners, Andy Dunbar and Bob Clunie, along with a few other employees. In 1984 he bought the building that Thayer Engineering Company now calls home. Today, there are nine employees at this small but very busy Farmingdale engineering firm. Thayer Engineering Company recently received the President’s Award from the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce, a testament to their value to the community.

Land surveying projects completed by Elliot Thayer and his team include boundary, topographic and hydrographic surveys for private, commercial and governmental clients. Elliot oversees all the planning and design of commercial and industrial buildings and facilities sites; marine terminals; highways and streets; recreational facilities; storm drainage systems; sewer systems; erosion & sedimentation control; residential, commercial and industrial developments and subdivisions. Elliot has acted as an expert witness in numerous cases in his capacity as a Professional Land Surveyor and as a Professional Engineer.

Career Background
Elliot graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1976 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He has been a Professional Land Surveyor in the State of Maine since 1973 and a Professional Engineer in the State of Maine since 1982. Before starting Thayer Engineering, Elliot was an assistant engineer at the Maine Department of Transportation in Augusta, Maine and a manager of the survey division at Doten Associates in Augusta, Maine. Elliot has completed numerous short courses, continuing education courses, seminars and workshops in various topics, such as real estate law, boundary law and legal principles, environmental law, land surveying, computer programming and programs, street and road design, geology, hydrology and environmental engineering.

Elliot has been a member of several professional societies: the Maine Society of Land Surveyors (Secretary in 1984-1985); the Legislative Committee of the Maine Society of Land Surveyors (Chairman in 1999-2000) and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Andrew (Andy) Dunbar

Andy Dunbar was the first professional to join Elliot when Thayer Engineering was just getting started. After working at Doten Associates six years, Andy joined Elliot in 1984 and has been with Thayer Engineering ever since.

Andy provides professional services to title companies, legal entities and lending institutions. He also works with developers and private owners. Whether the need is for a rapid turnaround on a mortgage inspection or complex remedial work, Andy and his staff are ready to help. Andy is also the professional our customers go to for Elevation Certificates and Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) applications.

Career Background
Andy graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1978, cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Management. He has been a Professional Forester in the State of Maine since 1978 and a Professional Land Surveyor in the State of Maine since 1982. Andy has also been a licensed Site Evaluator in the State of Maine since 1995 and a Notary Public since 1984.

Andy has completed numerous seminars and short courses over the years to enhance his skills on subjects including land use planning, forestry, geology, legal principles, boundary law, surveying, and septic system design.

Andy is a member of the following professional societies: the National Society of Professional Surveyors, the Maine Society of Land Surveyors and the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping. He has also served his community well over the years - coaching youth hockey and serving in municipal government as a Selectman and Planning Board member.

Robert (Bob) C. Clunie, Jr.

Bob Clunie joined Thayer Engineering Company, Inc. in 1985 after running his own surveying business in Augusta for several years. Bob’s roles at the company include managing the CAD department, preparing environmental permit applications, working on commercial and residential site designs and performing boundary and topographic surveys



Career Background
Bob graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1970 with a degree in Forest Management. Prior to joining Thayer Engineering, Bob was able to gain valuable experience in his capacity as a forester for Seven Islands Land Company in Greenville and as a field person for John E. O’Donnell Associates in Auburn. He was head cartographer at the Maine Bureau of Geology and a project analyst for the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission. Bob has completed numerous short courses, continuing education courses, seminars and workshops in various topics such as computer programming and programs, real estate law, boundary law and legal principles, environmental law, land surveying, geology, hydrology and environmental engineering.

Bob has been an active member of the Maine Society of Land Surveyors and has been the City of Gardiner Trustee to the Cobbossee Watershed District, most recently serving as Chairman.

Michaeline Mulvey
Professional Land Surveyor and Site Evaluator - mmulvey@thayereng.com
Michaeline Mulvey is a professional land surveyor and a licensed site evaluator at Thayer Engineering Company. She has been with the firm since 1993.







Career Background
Michaeline graduated from Nasson College in Maine with a biology degree. She has been a Professional Site Evaluator since 1987 and a Professional Land Surveyor since 1988. Before coming to Thayer, she sharpened her skills at North by East Associates and Brian Smith Surveying, Inc. Michaeline has completed numerous short courses, continuing education courses, seminars and workshops in various topics such as real estate law, land surveying, boundary law and legal principles, wetland ecology, wetland delineation, soil science and septic system design. She has made presentations at schools to encourage more women to choose surveying as a career.

Michaeline is a member of the Maine Society of Land Surveyors (President in 1994), Maine Association of Site Evaluators, the National Society of Professional Surveyors, Maine Association of Wetland Scientists and the Town of Bowdoin Planning Board.

Colleen Foster
Office Manager
Colleen Foster has worked for Thayer Engineering Company since 1996. She is the first contact that customers have with the company when they telephone or visit. While manning the front desk, she performs several other functions for the company. Colleen is responsible for all the records in the office and makes sure that all information is logged in and indexed so that it can be readily available for research that she and the other employees perform. Along with researching records at the office, Colleen does preliminary research for new projects at registries of deeds and municipal offices. She prepares mortgage loan inspection sketches for final review. Colleen works with the other staff to prepare legal documents and material needed for the permitting process. She also prepares invoices and tracks their payment status for the office and is in charge of ordering supplies.

Career Background
Colleen received a Bachelor of Arts degree in pre-Personnel and Industrial Relations from the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. Colleen gained valuable experience related to her job when she worked for a title company where she completed the Land Title Institute’s Course 1. She has taken computer courses and other short courses related to her job. She is a Notary Public for the State of Maine.

Colleen stayed home for several years to raise her children but stayed active in community organizations where she honed her attention-to-detail, organizational and people skills. She has served as vice-president of St. Mary’s Home/School Association and served on the School Board. She was a booster representative for several years for the Augusta Booster Club. She served two years on the finance committee of the United Way Campaign. Colleen has also held many offices in the international sorority, Beta Sigma Phi including President of the greater Augusta area City Council.

Rachel Choate
Bookkeeper
Rachel is our firm’s bookkeeper and backup secretary. Since her arrival she has expanded the use of our computerized accounting program and assisted with administrative responsibilities. Rachel coordinated our conversion to a new accounting software package which has improved our reporting capabilities and provided the opportunity for real time billing.



Career Background
Rachel’s early years were spent in the automotive sales arena where she gained customer service, finance and management experience. She left the car business as manager of an auto lease and rental company with 4 employees and a fleet exceeding 175 cars and trucks. After having a family she returned to the workforce and found her niche in the construction design field. Since 1990 Rachel has worked with several local architectural and engineering design firms in support roles ranging from secretary, and personnel coordinator to bookkeeper. During her time in the construction design field she has become proficient at a variety of software: Microsoft Office, Arcom Masterspec, QuickBooks, Wind2 FMS, and Deltek’s Vision accounting software.

Rachel is a Notary Public.

Nathan (Nate) Martin
CAD Drafter and Engineering/Surveying Technician
Nate Martin is a professional land surveyor with nearly five years experience in the land surveying field. He is a skilled draftsman and is called upon in the office to use his AutoCAD expertise. He leads the field crew in completing boundary and topographic surveys and construction layout. He also does records research at various town offices and registries.



Career Background
Nate graduated from Central Maine Technical College in Auburn, Maine with an Applied Science Associate’s Degree in Architectural and Civil Engineering Technology. He is currently a professional land surveyor in training and is a member of the Maine Society of Land Surveyors. Nate acquired experience in the construction industry prior to working for Thayer at his job at J & N Foundations in Wales, Maine.

Peter Wilcox
CAD Drafter and Engineering/Surveying Technician
Peter Wilcox joined Thayer Engineering Company, Inc. in 2003. He works with Nate Martin and Ben Rowe on the land surveying crew in the field and prepares AutoCAD plans for projects in the office. Peter also sees to it that all of the technical equipment in the office is in good repair and is ready when needed.




Career Background
Peter worked on his undergraduate degree at Fitchburg State College and the University of Maine. He has taken an AutoCAD course and looks forward to taking other courses to enhance his skills on the job. Peter worked in construction for five years and also worked on computers at Digital Equipment Company and Intel in Hudson, Massachusetts from 1994 to 1998. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1990 to 1994.

Peter is a member of the Maine Society of Land Surveyors.

Ben Rowe
Surveying Technician Assistant
Ben Rowe has been with Thayer Engineering since June 2006. He currently works on a part-time basis with Peter and Nate on the land surveying crew.







Career Background
Ben graduated from Hall-Dale High School in 2004 and spent two years as an apprentice at Performance Automotive Machine where he built high performance engines. He is currently a full-time student at Southern Maine Community College and is working on getting an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science Technology.
